In her series “Meaningful in its Meaninglessness,” Sulafa created a process that introduces numbers from her surroundings to add parameters as she is crocheting intuitively. Here, for example, from the window of her studio, Sulafa had a bird’s eye view of a compound of 48 connected villas. She could see their architecture and the mechanical ductwork on their rooftops.
She took a photo and then decided to count the shapes she saw in the layout. This set of numbers was then used to crochet intuitively without having an outcome of shape or form in mind.
In this way, this crochet project becomes an archive of her surroundings, a playful way to reinterpret the traditionally preset dynamic of crochet, This kind of project is an opportunity to journal – to make whatever she encounters part of her process.

She created a process that introduces numbers from her surroundings to add parameters as she is crocheting intuitively. Here, for example, she went for a walk from her car to her studio where she kept note of the day and date, number of steps, in addition to the elevator floors selected by her and others. In this way, this crochet project becomes an archive of the day–a record of place, time where she walked and who she interacted with. A playful way to break the / change the traditionally preset dynamic of crochet, injecting elements of the everyday as a way to reinterpret how to create art. Opportunity to journal what she encounters, to make them part of her process, and display as an outcome in the shape or form of the art.

The course in an object 15 students, 9 artworks in a sequence, 135 artworks, 340 room number Year : 2023
Medium : Yarn
Dimensions : 34.5 x 15 cm
This artwork was created during Sulafa’s visit to Berlin in 2023, where she took part in the art workshop, “Aesthetic Transformation Process”, at the Berlin Summer University of the Arts.
The numbers she used to crochet this work were inspired by her surroundings and the outcome of the workshop. Sulafa was among 15 participating students, and each day during the collaborative workshop, students were given a prompt and worked in nine rounds to create an artwork in response to the previous one. Overall the students created 135 artworks over the course of the one-week workshop, and 340 is the room number the workshop was conducted in.
The yarn colors used were inspired by the yellow and red logo of the Summer University of the Arts.

This piece in the ‘Meaningful in its Meaninglessness” series serves as a departure from working primarily with textiles, where the artist finds herself veering away from the conventional medium, redirecting toward alternative materials with yarn-like properties.
Sulafa began experimenting with black garbage bags, repurposing them into elongated, slender strips. This expansion of her material palette not only nurtures her creative growth but also unlocks possibilities to explore materials that can give another tactile experience. Resourcefulness becomes a guiding principle, as she employs what is readily available within her immediate environment
