This playful collection of edible artworks presented in ‘Finissage’ as part of the Open Studio at 1604 (Feb 2025) is testament to being responsive to open-ended ideas, and pushing what is possible when merging one’s creative practice with other, unfamiliar mediums.
During her time in the studio program at 1604 Arts Space, Sulafa worked alongside multidisciplinary artists Elham Shafaei and Natalya Konforti, and deeply engaged with these artists’ creative practices to discover shared interests. As the engagement with Elham and Natalya evolved, the trio wanted to create a collaborative project to present at the Open Studio. Upon discovering that edible art was unexplored, their collective energy and interest shifted to develop projects themed around “thread”, a common element shared in their work. Sulafa looked at foods that could be crocheted. She used bread dough, Laces Straw candy, and even chocolate to create edible works of art. She used two techniques; one, to cast a mold of a crocheted swatch, pouring chocolate into the mold to produce bars with this crochet design. In the second technique, she directly crocheted the candy and the bread dough. Through this project, these artists were inspired to create work in unconventional mediums, ingredients, and formats, embracing play and challenging interactivity and accessibility in their practice.
